Overview

Education is the key to the 21st Century, both in terms of economic prosperity and personal achievement. Today’s new economy is knowledge-based, entrepreneurial, and globally competitive to an extent that was unimaginable even a decade ago. Yet New Mexico students lag significantly in most measures of K-12 academic success, especially in math and science. Improving this situation will be challenging, but essential.

For this reason, New Mexico First held a summit that resulted in an action plan that will ensure important STEM education goals are achieved for New Mexico students and teachers in the following areas:

  • PreK-12 STEM teacher support across their professional continuum; both preparation and development in using inquiry-based methods
  • Classroom experiences for PreK-12 STEM students that are rigorous and relevant to industry needs
  • Support for students transitioning from PreK-12 to post-secondary STEM degrees and careers

What Happened at the Summit?
New Mexico First used its unique consensus-building approach to facilitate the summit. This was not a typical conference with a series of presentations. There was panel of experts who shared their views regarding best practices. But, the bulk of the summit was comprised of small group discussions among people who care about the topic and wanted to create an action plan that ensures important STEM education goals are achieved for New Mexico students and teachers.

Prior to the session, participants received a background report. The report provided valuable information on the progress made, and the challenges ahead. It served as a basis for the planning discussions held during the session.

What Happened after the Summit?
An implementation team was formed and will work, over the next 12 months, to move forward the plan developed at the session.
