2012 Town Hall on Fire and Water

Overview

Dates: June 5-6, 2012
Times: Tuesday 9:30 AM -5:00 PM, Wednesday 8:00 AM -2:30 PM - Implementation Team Kick-off Meeting starts at 3:00 PM.
Location: Hyatt Regency, 330 Tijeras Avenue NW, Albuquerque, New Mexico 87102

Linkages between water quality and forest fires are a recurring theme in New Mexico communities. Last summer’s Las Conchas Fire in Northern New Mexico affected not only individual communities, but also the economic development, ecological systems, recreational interests, community health, and municipal water supply throughout the region. Learning from this devastating fire can help all New Mexicans protect our valuable natural resources.

For these reasons, New Mexico’s Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (NM EPSCoR) is convening a two-day town hall where participants will explore the impact of fire on the region, lessons learned that can be applied in future situations, and put forth their best ideas for policy changes.

These changes may include:
  • Activities to address the aftermath of the Las Conchas fire
  • Future policies to mitigate the impact of wildfires in watersheds throughout New Mexico
Who Should Attend?
  • Community members
  • Business people
  • Advocates
  • Researchers and educators
  • Tribal members
  • Public officials
  • Government employees
  • Students
Seating is limited. Early registration is highly recommended.

What Happens at the Town Hall?
This will not be a typical conference with a series of presentations. There will be a few speakers to help set the context, but the bulk of the town hall is comprised of small group discussions among participants who care about the issues and want to create practical recommendations for change.

Prior to the town hall, participants will receive a background report that will outline the key issues and serve as a basis for the discussions held during the town hall.

What Happens after the Town Hall?
The recommendations will not result in a report that sits on a shelf. Immediately after the summit, the EPSCoR Implementation Team will develop a plan to advance the recommendations.
